Wearing tights every day, having to clean them or having to change them because they snagged again is probably one of the most unnerving things. In order to help you out, we figured a few easy ways for you to keep your tights a long time, without having them completely ruined after you’ve thrown them in the washing machine.
It’s not that its hard but after using our techniques, your tights are going to last you a long time or better yet, an entire season. We wrote an article about How to keep your tights an entire season, which does correlate on how to care for tights and washing them the right way.
Follow the list of do’s and don’ts and we promise you’ll get to keep them a long time. Bear in mind that the lower the Denier the more fragile they are.
The Hand Washing Technique
When you purchase a pair of tights, think about washing them after 2 wears and always make sure to check the CARE TAG! This helps a lot. Fill a clean sink with cold to tepid water and add a tiny bit of mild detergent and a tablespoon of baking soda. Make sure to take off your rings and jewelry so you don’t rip them in the process. Let your tights soak for 10 minutes then scrunch them and rinse over cold water to get any dirt out. Roll up your tights in a towel to remove any excess water and hang to let them air dry.
The Machine Wash Technique
If you have 40 or 50Den tights, just pop them in the washing machine with other clothes at a maximum of 30C°. If the Denier is lower than 30Den; follow these instructions, you might want to get yourself a lingerie bag, if you don’t own one then use a pillow cover and secure the top with a rubber band- it works just as well. Add a mild detergent (don’t add fabric softener) and wash on cold, gentle cycle. Make sure not to add any bra’s or zippers in the same bag as this might lead to your tights snagging or ripping. Once done, hang them up to dry and voila!
A lingerie bag isn’t just for your tights – even though it helps a lot! It comes in very handy for those delicates such as bra’s and delicates and quite honestly, shouldn’t cost you more than 10CHF.
Don’t tumble dry!
Whatever you do, do not, I repeat, do NOT put your tights in the tumble dry! This will damage the elasticity as well as the silicone waistband. You’ll notice that the stretch will be gone and the tights won’t hold up any longer.
And there you go! Now you have all the good tips and tricks on how to maintain your tights and knee-highs an entire season. Clean them the right way, because there is a right way, but whatever you do just do not tumble dry. It’s super easy and honestly doesn’t take up much of your time.
We hope this article helped you in your future endeavors of becoming a professional tights washer 😉
